If you use ChatGPT, you’ve probably seen “Operator” show up in your sidebar recently.

If you are wondering what it is and why you can’t use it, I’ll give you a summary.

ChatGPT Operator is their AI agent.  An [agent](https://thoughtsbrewing.com/blog/ai-quick-tips-126-non-techie-definitions-of-ai-terms-part-iv) is an AI tool that is able to use tools and make decisions on its own (there’s more to agents than that, but it is enough of a description for now).  In this case, the agent is able to use its own browser, type, click, scroll, and carry out tasks for you.

It is a “research preview,” which means that they are still taking user-experience data and refining the product. It is only available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers.  That is the $200/month plan.

I can’t tell you how it works from first-hand knowledge because, honestly, we aren’t willing to pay $200/month for ChatGPT.  They are going to make it available to the other account tiers after they’ve tested it out for a bit longer.  Not sure what the time frame will be.
