AI Quick Tips 199: Use ChatGPT to help you write SOPs (free prompt)

AI Quick Tips

That wasn’t supposed to rhyme.  Sigh.  Oh well, can’t go back.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are step-by-step instructions on how to do something within an organization.

They can really come in handy when -

  • You have new staff members
  • You have something to troubleshoot
  • You have volunteers
  • You have temps
  • Someone else has to fill in for you
  • Etc.

The problem is that not everyone likes to take the time to create SOPs so when you need them they are nowhere to be found.  The good news is that you can use an AI tool like ChatGPT to simplify the process of creating the SOPs.

There are a lot of ways to potentially do this so there may be follow-up posts with other options.  We’ll see.

One way to create an SOP with ChatGPT
is to -

  1. Create a short video (less than 20 minutes) of you talking through the process
  2. Transcribe the video (turn it into text)
    1. You can use Google Gemini to do this
  3. Use the following prompt to have ChatGPT extract the steps

Prompt

(add the transcript as an attachment)

Your job is to help me create a standard operating procedure for [TOPIC]

Use the attached transcript to outline the step-by-step instructions that I can use to train someone to do this activity

Output a numbered list

If the output doesn’t work for you, use a follow-up prompt to point out what is incorrect, what is correct, and ask it to try again.
