The heading pretty much covers the main point so I will get right into it. OpenAI believes that “AI should help solve humanity’s hardest problems, and that (they) should listen to and learn from organizations already leading that work on the frontlines”.
To support this work, they’ve announced a $50 million commitment to support nonprofits and they are accepting grant applications through 11:00 P.M. PT on October 8th.
They are considering organizations at “every stage of AI adoption - from exploration to pilots and active deployment”. Specifically, they are looking for organizations working in three areas-
- AI literacy and public understanding - i.e. education programs, media initiatives and opportunities for people to build AI knowledge, skills, and confidence
- Community Innovation - efforts to ensure that AI strengthens civic life and helps people stay healthy, connected, and thriving. Priority consideration will be given to schools, libraries, clinics, and/or community centers,
- Economic Opportunity - programs that prepare people, especially young people, for jobs of the future, tools that support caregivers and local businesses, and initiatives that help workers build economic security
Specific requirements include -
- Organizations must be U.S. based public charities with a valid 50(c)(3) status
- Organizations must be located in and primarily conducting work within the 50 U.S. states or District of Columbia
- Organizations with an annual operating budget between $500,000 and $10 million
- Organizations will not be considered if they will use the resources for regranting purposes
- Fiscally sponsored projects will not be considered
