AI Quick Tips 228: Prompt Framework S.M.A.R.T.

Yes, this is the classic framework for goal-setting but you can apply it to AI tool prompts as well.

The benefit of that is that it will probably be easy for you to remember.

If you aren’t familiar with it, the framework is called SMART.  It stands for -

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

Here’s how it can be used for AI tool prompting -

  • Specific - make your prompt clear, concise, and specific
  • Measurable - include numbers where possible to guide the output (i.e. keep it under 250 words)
  • Achievable - ask for something that can be done
    • Bonus points for if it has been done before and you provide that example to help the AI tool
  • Relevant - make sure that everything that you put in the prompt is aligned with the output that you want.  Extra information/context will make it easier for the AI tool to mess up your output
  • Time-bound - identify any time constraints (i.e. if you want the output to be a conversation with 3 back and forths, say so)
