AI Quick Tips 245: Sick of "AI slop" images? So is Pinterest

AI Quick Tips

Full disclosure - I am not a Pinterest user.  Let’s get that out of the way.

This isn’t really about me though.  What Pinterest is doing may be interesting to others which is why I am sharing it here.

Pinterest is a visual-first social media site where you can “pin” things (usually images) to boards with other similar things.  Like a digital scrapbook.  I’m not doing it justice, I know.

Anyway, a lot of people have been leaving the platform or staying but not really using it anymore because there are so many AI-generated images.  Since people have access to the same AI tools and use similar prompts, the images aren’t that different.  The people who used to use the platform for inspiration or just to see what creative things people are working on lost interest.

Less interest usually means less money so Pinterest is allowing people to partially opt-out of AI-generated images.  They have a tuner tool that lets you select the areas where you are willing to see AI images in recommendations.  It looks like they will only show you “fewer” and not “none” but baby steps…

From what I can see, you get to it by going to Settings > Refine your recommendations and then select/deselect each area

A screenshot of an app settings menu titled, "Choose GenAI interests you'd like to see in your recommended Pins." Below the title is a list of interests, each with an on/off toggle switch. The interests are: Art, Architecture, Beauty, Children's fashion, Entertainment, Health, Home Decor, and Men's fashion. Some toggles are switched on (black) and others are switched off (gray). This menu allows a user to customize their content recommendations based on generative AI-related topics.

This post was mainly to let you know that the option exists, so if you want to see the full story in their words, here is the link - https://newsroom.pinterest.com/news/pinterest-rolls-out-new-tools-to-give-users-more-control-over-gen-ai-content/
