AI Quick Tips 285: You don’t have to train everybody

Written by Damien Griffin | Feb 7, 2026 2:15:00 PM

We’ve trained a lot of people on how to use these shiny new AI tools over the past few years, specifically teams of people.

One pattern that we’ve noticed is that AI training is usually an all or nothing event.  Meaning that either 100% of team members will be trained or 0% will be trained.

We aren’t here to tell you how to run your business or your team.  That doesn’t mean that we don’t have opinions, though.  If you are interested, I will share (if not, I assume you’ve already stopped reading…)

In a lot of cases, I think that teams could be more successful if they trained no more than 20% of the staff (this gets messy if you have less than 5 people but that’s another post).  If you train 10 - 20% of your group deeply then either that group can encourage others over time or that group can elevate those areas of your business.

The reality is that it might not be worth it to train some people.  If they are a top producer, have mastered their workflow, and are resistant to changing to protect what they’ve built, is it worth risking them becoming less productive and resentful because they were forced down this other road?  Your choice, I’m just posing the question.

There are also people who don’t learn well in certain environments.  If one person out of 100 doesn’t “get it” on a live Zoom call, how likely are they to speak up, and slow down everyone else so they can hear the explanation for the third time?

There are many (many) other examples but I think the message is there.

I’ve talked to very few people who I didn’t think could benefit in some way from knowing how to use one or more AI tools.  That doesn’t mean that all those people were willing participants in learning and changing their ways.

Think about it…
