AI Quick Tips 298: Temporary chats in Claude

A graphic title card on a dark blue background. On the left is an orange robot head with a speech bubble containing the text 'AI'. To the right is a light blue circle containing the words 'Quick Tips'.

At this point it seems rude not to make one of these posts about Claude…

Similarly to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, Claude has an incognito (aka temporary) chat option.

You can activate it by clicking on the little pac-man ghost in the upper right corner or using the key combo Ctrl + Shift + IA screenshot of an AI chat interface with the greeting "Afternoon, Damien" above a central search bar. A large orange arrow in the top right corner points to a small ghost-shaped icon used to activate incognito mode.

When you do, the screen will change so you know that it is in Incognito chat modeThe AI chat interface after activating "Incognito chat," with the greeting updated to "Greetings, whoever you are". A banner in the top left confirms the mode is active, and a button in the top right provides an option to "Exit incognito".

Your chats in this mode aren’t saved to your chat history.

You can exit the mode pretty much the same way that you started it. Either click on the X in the upper right or press Ctrl + Shift + I.

Claude gets bonus points for changing their greeting to “whoever you are”...
