This is a new-ish Google AI feature that is still in “Preview”. It allows you to have “low-latency, real-time voice and vision interactions with Gemini. It processes continuous streams of audio, images, and text to deliver immediate, human-like responses , creating a natural conversational experience for your users”

This is one of those building blocks for interesting applications.

Some of the examples that they have are -

  • AI education mentors and learner companions that provide personalized feedback
  • Real-time translation of spoken languages
  • Voice-enabled experiences in robotics and vehicles
  • Customer support agents that resolve customer issues
  • Etc.

So far, it supports 70 languages.

It also supports features like

  • Tool use
    • Google search, function calling, etc.
  • Audio transcriptions
  • Barge-in
    • Users can interrupt the model at any time
  • Proactive audio
    • You can control when the model responds and in what contexts
