AI Quick Tips 356: Create video shorts with NotebookLM

There’s no sign of the NotebookLM team slowing down with their updates. This one expands what you can do when you create videos from your sources.

In addition to the Cinematic and Explainer options, now you can create Short videos. They call them “A bite-sized overview to help you quickly grasp core ideas from your sources”.

 

I’ve seen people reference them as “TikTok-style”. You can decide that part for yourself.

 

The videos are usually less than 60 seconds long. Ironically, they take a LONG time to generate. Keep that in mind if your goal is to summarize a bunch of sources quickly before a meeting or some other scenario where you hope to use the feature to save time right now. That plan may backfire. It could also take so long because the feature is still new so more people are trying it out. Who knows?

 

It’s the same initial setup within NotebookLM

  1. Create a notebook
  2. Add at least one source
  3. Select at least one source
  4. Select the arrow next to “Video Overview” to open the customization window

 

At the top of the window, choose Short as your FormatNotebookLM "Format" selection menu displaying three options: Cinematic, Explainer, and Short. The Cinematic option is selected with a checkmark and is described as a rich, immersive experience that unpacks complex ideas through engaging visuals and storytelling. The Explainer option is described as a structured, comprehensive overview that connects the dots within sources. The Short option is labeled as "New!" and is described as a bite-sized overview to help users quickly grasp core ideas from sources.

 

Then decide what the video should focus on. Either pick one of their AI-generated options or type in your own custom topicNotebookLM customization interface under the heading "What should the video focus on?". It displays three pre-generated suggestion cards—"Atmos Workflow Steps," "Mixing For Beginners," and "Audio Loudness Mastery"—followed by a "Custom topic" text box containing the placeholder text "Describe your own."

A blue "Generate" button sits at the bottom center of the interface.
