# AI Quick Tips 401: Gemini Gems are going away
November 5, 2026
 [Damien Griffin](https://thoughtsbrewing.com/blog/author/damien)
Remember those Gems that you created a year ago and barely touched? Well, if you want to keep them, you’ll have to migrate them to skills.
I’ll get right to the timeline since I think that is what you will care about the most -
- **November 17, 2026 (personal accounts)**
- Gems transition to skills and become read only. You can still access your Gems, but can’t use or edit them, or create new ones
- **December 17, 2026 (personal accounts)**
- Gems are removed from Gemini Apps. You’ll no longer be able to access your Gems
- **March 2027 (Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit accounts)**
- Details are lacking but this is their current timeline to get rid of Gems for these types of accounts. If you have one of these account types, start migrating as soon as possible
- **June 2027 (Workspace education accounts)**
- Details are lacking but this is their current timeline to get rid of Gems for these types of accounts. If you have one of these account types, start migrating as soon as possible
Google says that they will automatically transition your Gems to skills for you when Gems go away. You might be better off creating skills yourself and making sure that they work the way that you want them to while you can still access Gems.
If you have knowledge files in your Gems, you may not be able to transfer them. Google identified some “limits on files during the transition”
- **Skills have a 100 MB total size limit for files**
- If your Gem is larger than this, your files will be deleted until it is under this limit (largest files first)
- **Some file types are not supported**
- Github files
- Audio files
- Video files
- Legacy Microsoft Office files: .doc, .xls, .ppt
- Compressed file formats: .zip, .tar, ..7z, .rar, .gz, .tgz
This is, of course, subject to change.
(download the stuff you care about just in case…)
