AI Quick Tips 1: ChatGPT prompt writing basics

A lot of people will try an AI tool like ChatGPT a few times, not like the results that they get, and never use the tool again.  Don’t be one of those people.

While the tools are designed to be used by “non-techie” people, there is still a learning curve and you won’t get good results if your prompts are missing information.

There are entire courses about how to create effective prompts for ChatGPT.  If you are reading this then I assume that you don’t have that kind of time right now.

Here is a simple prompt framework to get you started:

  1. Give it a persona/Tell it who it is
  2. Give it a task
  3. Give it context
  4. Give it a way to structure the results

Example:

  1. You are marketing director at a small, 20-person business
  2. Create a social media marketing campaign for the company’s new product
  3. The product is a combination #2 pencil and pez dispenser.  The pencil’s eraser peels back and the pez will come out from under it.  The audience is bored college engineering students who still need to use pencils to create technical drawings
  4. Deliver the results as a 10-step numbered list that can be given to the marketing associates

A few things to note:

  1. You do not have to include all of the items but it usually helps if you do
  2. It can be written as one paragraph or in sections (like above)
  3. This is probably longer than the prompts you’ve been using.  More context produces better output from AI Tools
  4. This is just the beginning…

Happy prompting
