Answering your questions about business and technology

Question

Half the people that I talk to say that AI is going to save the world and the other half tell me that AI is going to destroy everything!  What am I supposed to do with that?!

Answer

Hi Larry,

Hmmm, this is less technical and more philosophical.  I approve this line of questioning…

I will open with - I can’t see the future and my opinions are just that, opinions.

If you are still reading then I would recommend that you choose a path that will benefit you either way.  The one that I heard recently that makes the most sense to me is to become (or continue to be) a high-agency generalist

I like the breakdown of high-agency from the website highagency.com (ironically).  They say that high agency is a combination of 3 skills rarely found together

    1. Clear thinking
    2. Bias to action
    3. Disagreeability

They go into a lot more detail than that but I think that it works as a summary.

And for the generalist side of that recommendation, I think that the more different areas that you get good in, the more connections that you will be able to make.  This will make you more valuable and able to solve more complicated problems.  This goes against a lot of the common advice to specialize, niche, etc. Building a generalist skill-set has served me VERY well over the years and I highly recommend it.  It does take more time, effort, energy and attention though.

I could elaborate on this for hours but I try to keep these answers short because I know that people are busy.

If you learn how to use AI tools to supplement your human skills and become a high-agency generalist, you’ll be fine however things turn out.

Good luck out there
