Answer

Hi,

This is a common question that can get kind of complicated, but I will try to answer it simply.

Models with ChatGPT and similar chatbots (like Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity) are the main components that allow them to understand human languages. Computer programs usually need some kind of machine language, aka a programming language like Python or JavaScript.

The models allow them to interact with text, images, audio, etc.

You can think about different models like GPT-3.5, GPT-4o, etc. like different versions that have different capabilities.  For example, they may support different languages (Spanish, French, German, etc.) or have different features (like Search or Canvas).

I think that a good comparison is vehicles.  If you want to buy a Toyota, for example, there are different models.  Each model has different capabilities.  Some are large 4-door sedans that can hold a lot of people.  Some are trucks that hold fewer people but can carry or tow loads.  Some are hybrids that get better gas mileage, etc.  You get the model that aligns with what you want to do.

As far as which one you should use, usually the default model works for most people in most cases.  You probably don’t need to change it unless you know that there is a feature that it doesn’t support (like Canvas).

Until you get to an intermediate or advanced level with AI chatbots, you won’t worry about models much.

Hope that helps.
