Book Brew 156: Stop Waiting for Motivation: How to Vote for Your Future Self

Written by Danielle Price Griffin | Feb 2, 2026 2:15:00 PM

My LinkedIn feed just staged an intervention using a post I wrote to my future self three days ago.

The 90-Minute Staredown

I have been sitting in front of my laptop for about 90 minutes bouncing back and forth on if I want to write my next round of blog posts or not.  Mostly because I “don’t feel like it”.  Partly because Damien introduced me to a new game on my phone that I am now slightly addicted to.

The Algorithm of Fate

But, as I was procrasti-scrolling through my LinkedIn feed, I came across a post that I wrote a few days ago that included the quote above from James Clear.

It’s funny how these things come back around at just the right time.  Even though I wrote and posted the LI post days ago, it just hit my feed now, when I seemingly needed to hear the message most.  Did I know that at the time I wrote the post and then scheduled it to be published? Nope. But, as an Inverse Paranoid, this is how I believe the universe is conspiring for me.

"When you believe that every situation, even those that seem negative at first, is happening for your benefit, you are more likely to look for the silver lining and take proactive steps to turn the situation to your advantage." - Brian Tracy

So rather than waiting for the motivation to kick in and wasting time on procrasti-scolling (I differ this from doom-scrolling because I wasn’t sucked in FB or news feeds which tend to take me down doom holes [but not like DOOM, because that would be fun to play right about now] but because I’m scrolling with the sole purpose of knowingly procrastinating on the thing I know I need to do) I’m going to get to writing my next batch of blog posts.

I choose to take this positive action towards writing the blog posts because it is placing a vote for the person I wish to become.

“Act like the version of you that already won.” - Dan Martell

What votes do you need to place right now to become the person you want to be?

Ponder This

  1. When was the last time you sat staring at a blinking cursor while your phone felt like a magnet?
  2. Think of a time a "past version" of you accidentally gave you exactly the advice you needed today.
  3. What is one tiny, five-minute "vote" you can cast right now for the person you’re becoming?
