# Book Brew 192: F\*\*\* off and Get Out! Yes, Gordon Ramsay Sits at My Council Table

A business owner in a local group once insisted that everyone in the world starts their calendar week on Sunday. She was equally certain that “next weekend” could only mean one thing and was not ambiguous.

That seemed like a lot of confidence to place in two words and a calendar square.

I pointed out that people use different calendar conventions, and “next weekend” can mean different things to different people. If the date matters, say the full date…this avoids confusion for everyone. She held her ground. Then people from other countries joined the comments and described how their calendars worked.

I learned something from that conversation, too. I can’t remember the particular calendar detail that surprised me, which is annoying because I would love to put it here and sound impressive. But I remember the more useful part: the discussion got better when people with different experiences joined it.

> *“Appreciate the art of thoughtful disagreement.” - Ray Dalio*

I don’t know why this strange conviction-level conversation surfaced recently, but it did and it had me thinking about my [Imaginary Council Table](https://thoughtsbrewing.com/blog/book-brew-149-napoleon-hill-said-to-build-a-council-table-so-i-made-it-a-party) and how I can use it to avoid the sycophantic nature of AI tools.

## Please stop complimenting my idea

> *“You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper.” — Edward de Bono*

My table has quite a cast.

- Gordon Ramsay brings high standards and a willingness to say when something is utter rubbish.
- Marcus Lemonis looks at the business.
- Edward de Bono thinks sideways.
- Daniel Kahneman questions the assumptions.
- Robert Cialdini considers how people respond.

There are plenty more seats, including one for Jonathan, the giant tortoise. He has lived long enough to deserve an opinion.

## AI Skills Meet My Council

Now imagine putting those council members into a reusable AI skill.

You describe each member’s personality and perspective once. When you bring the skill an idea, each member weighs in. They can disagree with you and with one another.

I would absolutely love for Gordon to insult my idea. I prefer a blunt British criticism I can use over a paragraph of fluff-filled praise that tells me bollocks.

The skill cannot give me the real Gordon Ramsay’s thoughts, of course. It gives me a structured way to examine an idea through several lenses. If a member claims a fact, I still have to check it. And if the whole council overlooks something, I need people outside the table.

## Let’s give them a donkey farm

Here’s a hypothetical idea I threw to my Council:

The Business Field Trip: Pair owners from unrelated industries to observe how the other business works. One visit pairs a donkey farm with an accounting firm. What could the firm learn about routines, care, scheduling, and noticing problems early? What might the farm learn about client finances or planning?

It sounds strange. Good. Let’s see what the table does with it.

- **Gordon Ramsay**: “What the hell is the assignment? ‘Go look at some donkeys’ is a day out, not a business idea. Give each owner a specific problem to investigate.”
- **Marcus Lemonis**: “Who pays? Why does the host give up time? What does each owner take home that makes the visit worthwhile?”
- **Edward de Bono**: “The unusual pairing is the interesting part. Could the firm learn something from the farm’s daily routines and early warning signs? Could the farm borrow a useful practice for client communication?”
- **Robert Cialdini**: “What would make two strangers comfortable opening their workplaces to each other?”
- **Daniel Kahneman:** “One visit might produce one unforgettable story. That doesn’t mean the practice will work in a different business. What small experiment would test it?”
- ***Jonathan*** is still considering his answer. He has time.

The council hasn’t totally killed the idea *(although, maybe they should…)*. They made the first version more specific:

- find two willing owners,
- agree on one operational question for each visit,
- set clear boundaries,
- and have each person test one small change afterward.

That is much more useful than *“Brilliant idea! You should launch it immediately!”* the kind of nonsense response most AI chatbots will give you. Yeah, it sounds supportive and all…right up until it meets a calendar, a budget, and an actual pile of donkey turds.

## Give your council a permanent meeting room

> *“The key to good decision making is not knowledge. It is understanding.” — Malcolm Gladwell*

You could paste the whole guest list into a new chat every time you have an idea. But why bother when AI Skills are made just for that purpose?

### A reusable AI skill gives the council a home.

In the skill, describe each member’s personality, what they pay attention to, and how they should respond when you present an idea.

- Gordon can be blunt.
- Marcus can examine the business model.
- Edward can suggest a direction nobody else considered.
- They should each get a turn before the skill pulls their responses together.

I’d give the skill a few house rules:

- Make each critique specific. “This needs work” is about as useful as a donkey with a squeaky chicken (and yes, this is a thing, there are [videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O65IVru6JNg), you should watch them!).
- **Let members disagree.** A council that reaches instant consensus on every idea is just one agreeable chatbot wearing several hats.
- **Separate questions from facts.** The council can ask whether two owners would trust each other enough for a field trip. It cannot claim to know the answer without asking them.
- **End with a test.** What is the smallest real-world step that could tell you whether the idea has legs?

You can bring back the same council for your next idea without rebuilding its personalities each time.

## Take a break from reading → Watch Some Videos

Damien explains the broader concept in[AI Skills Intro](https://youtu.be/i-Z8sEJbgo4). If you want to create one in ChatGPT, his[ChatGPT Skills walkthrough](https://youtu.be/F2Gkmq4SHGw) shows the creation process.

The skill supplies the voices and the structure. You still choose the idea, check any factual claims, and decide whose advice earns a place in the final plan.

## Leave a chair open

Even a council with a permanent meeting room needs an open chair. The commenters in that calendar discussion knew things neither the original poster nor I brought to it. Your council will have blind spots, too, because you chose its members, wrote their descriptions, and supplied the information they received.

That’s okay. Keep a chair open for someone who sees the problem differently.

## PONDER THIS

1. Who would you invite to challenge your next idea?
2. What would you do if they found a problem your entire council missed?
