Checklist: GROW Coaching Model

Effective coaches don’t have all the answers or solve their clients’ problems.  They ask the right questions to empower their clients to find the solutions themselves.

The GROW coaching model is a framework for those types of questions.

“GROW” represents the sections - Goal, Reality, Options, and Way forward.

GROW Checklist

  Define the goal
    1. Clearly and simply
  Define your current reality
    1. Circumstances
    2. Roadblocks
    3. Why the goal matters
  Brainstorm options to achieve the goal
    1. Consider resources and constraints
  Decide what action(s) will be taken
    1. Who will do them?
    2. When will they be done?
    3. How will the actions be reviewed?
    4. At what point will you try a different action? 

 

GROW Coaching Session Questions

Goal

  • What is important to you?
  • What would you like to learn?
  • What skills do you want to develop?
  • What does your ideal future look like?
  • What headline would you like to see about yourself in 10 years? 
  • What are you working toward?

Reality

  • Do you have a growth-mindset?
  • What is working well for you?
  • What strengths can you use to achieve your goal?
  • What obstacles are you facing?
  • What assumptions do you have about your ability to do this?
  • What do you need to do this?
  • What areas of your life will be impacted by this?
  • What people in your life will be impacted by this?
  • What scares you about doing this?
  • What excuses have you used in the past for not achieving your goals?
  • What have you done so far?
  • Why did you stop there?

Options

  • No B.S. what would it take to achieve this?
  • Have you done this before?
  • Do you know anyone that has done this before?
  • Who knows more about this than you do that you could ask for help?
  • What is your first step?
  • What would you do if you could not fail?
  • What would you do if time was not a factor?
  • What would you do if money was not a factor?
  • If someone else came to you with this goal, what would you tell them?
  • What one thing would make the most forward progress?
  • What option energizes you the most?
  • How do you want to move forward?

Way forward

  • When will you start?
  • Why not now?
  • What will prevent you from starting?
  • How committed are you to making this happen?
  • Who is responsible for each piece?
  • How will you know you’ve succeeded?
  • How will you celebrate achieving this?
  • How do you want to be held accountable?
  • How often will you review progress?
  • How will you review progress?
  • How will you know this option did not work?
  • Will you try another option if this does not work?
