So the last installment of Word Treasures wasn't actually the last one - I have found lots of new words since then.

Words can express not just meaning but also beauty, emotion, and nuance. This set of treasures explores the elegance of nicknames, the sweetness of sound, and the dignity of human character.

Today’s Word Gems

  • Sobriquet (noun) - a person’s nickname
    • NYT Games: Connections No. 429
  • Mellifluous (adj) - (of a voice or words) sweet or musical; pleasant to hear
    • Fairy Tale, pg 185 - “Or perhaps my mellifluous voice has hypnotized you?”
  •  Ennobling (verb) - lend greater dignity or nobility of character to
    • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, pg 224 - “It is much more ennobling to the human spirit to let people judge themselves than to judge them.”

Ponder This

  1. What nickname or sobriquet has had special meaning in your life?
  2. How does mellifluous language influence how we perceive people or experiences?

  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen Covey
