AI Quick Tips 208: Why "which AI tool is best?" is the wrong question and what to do instead

AI Quick Tips

We get asked this question a lot, and we see it even more often out in the wild.

I realize that, in the beginning stages of using anything, you don’t know what you don’t know so you have to start somewhere.

I want to address this question here so that I can point people to this post in the future.

If you went into a hardware store and asked “Which hammer is best?”, you would either get funny looks or they would ask you why you want a hammer.  Or both.

For reference, this is an image of 25 different types of hammers (not even close to the total amount available but I think it makes the point…)

Image grid showing 25 types of hammers, each labeled with its name, including Ball Peen, Sledge, Claw, Club, Dead Blow, Tack, Rubber, Framing, Brass, Brick, Electrician, Blacksmith, Bushing, Cross Peen, Drywall, Chasing, Engineers, Hatchet, Mechanic, Planishing, Power, Welding, Rock, Straight Peen, and Trim.

There can be a best hammer for the job that you want to do but I don’t think that there is a best hammer overall.  Sledgehammer is high on my list (hard to kill a fly with one though…)

To be clear, this isn’t about hammers.

Asking “which AI tool is best?” is a similar question.  Without any idea about what you want to do, any tool could be “best” for you in your situation.  If you are able to provide more context about what you hope to DO with the AI tool(s), it will be easier to guide you towards a solution.

The problem within the problem is that when you are just starting, you don’t know what you can do with AI tools so it becomes this chicken/egg scenario.  If this is your reality, then I strongly recommend that you start with a general-purpose chatbot like -

  • ChatGPT (OpenAI)
  • Gemini (Google)
  • Copilot (Microsoft)
  • Perplexity AI (Perplexity)
  • Claude (Anthropic)

These aren’t the only general-purpose AI tools but they are currently the most popular and widely used.  If you start with one of them and learn the basics then you can get an idea of what you would like to do.

With this newfound information, you can go back and modify your original question to something like - “Which AI tool is best for automating LinkedIn marketing campaigns that target xyz avatar on Tuesdays?”.  Or whatever your specific scenario is.

Those are much easier questions to answer.
