The natural world and the supernatural collide in this grouping, exploring valleys, ghostly presences, and even noxious fumes. ## Today’s Word Gems - **Dale** (noun) - a valley, especially a broad one - Fairy Tale, pg 251 - “We walked up hill and down dale, as one of those old stories might say.” - **Lintel** (noun) - a horizontal architectural member spanning and usually carrying the load above an opening - Fairy Tale, pg 197 - “At the back door, she pointed up.  Something had been carved into the lintel, higher than Dora could reach.” - **Eldritch** (adj) - weird and sinister or ghostly - Fairy Tale, pg 301 - “Something monstrous and, yes, eldritch.” - **Mephitic** (adj) - especially of a gas or vapor - foul-smelling; noxious - Fairy Tale, pg 301 - “He would have called it mephitic.” - **Viand** (noun) - an item of food - Fairy Tale, pg 265 - “I used to get more viands than I could eat from the people of Seafront, although usually fish rather than meat.” ## Ponder This 1.
