Book Brew 134: I Proved Simon Sinek Right with a Caffeine Crime Scene

Book Brew

I turned my kitchen into a coffee crime scene this morning.

Morning Chaos Meets Simon Sinek

I made a huge mess this morning when I made my coffee.  How? Well, it turns out, a coffee maker without its carafe is just a very angry fountain. It was a caffeine massacre, creating liquid fun all over my countertop.

The irony? This happened when I was listening to one of the later chapters in Leaders Eat Last, where Sinek talks about how multitasking doesn’t really work. I showed him…..yeah, no.

If Simon was in my kitchen, he would’ve high-fived me for proving his point so spectacularly.

The Morning Routine That Went Rogue

What I did this morning wasn’t really any different than any other morning.  I have my routine that I go step-by-step with:

  • Get the tea machine ready
  • Get my food items ready
  • Clean the coffee machine
  • Set up the coffee machine to make coffee
  • Start the coffee machine
  • Call and talk to my mom while I make my food
  • Eat food and drink coffee

This morning, my mom didn’t answer, which happens sometimes. When that happens, I listen to an audiobook.

So nothing was really out of the ordinary.  Yet, I failed to do what I always do by putting the carafe in the machine after I replace the basket, put in the filter, and add the beans.

Why I Laughed Instead of Cursed

Some may have gotten upset at this huge mess that was made.  I just laughed because it was so ridiculous and ironic.  Also, why be angry at something like that? Yeah, I had to remake my coffee, but so what? Small things like this aren’t worth wasting negative energy on (most things aren’t worth wasting negative energy on).  I would much rather choose to laugh, have a pleasant moment, and turn it into a lesson.

The Real Takeaway

I’m not really sure there is a massive takeaway here for those of you who have read this far, other than stop the multitasking (it is not a superpower) and laugh as much as you can.

Life’s too short to rage at spilled coffee, especially when there’s more coffee to make.

Ponder This

  1. When was the last time a small mistake turned into a moment of unexpected joy?
  2. Do you treat minor mishaps as disasters or as stories worth laughing about?
  3. How might your day feel different if you embraced “messy moments” instead of resisting them?
